What does a young boy from the suburbs of Chicago do when he fails his calculus paper at university? Give up, drive a train around The Loop, serve hot dogs at his beloved White Sox stadium? The answer is certainly not that simple in the journey of Chris Whitehouse. In his case, ignited by stories from his professors who served in the U.S. Peace Corps, who told him about the wonder and beauty of spending time in Thailand, this man decided to enrol in a language course – not Spanish, French or German – but Thai - a language with no relatable alphabet or written form that is comprehensible by most people, and one that probably ranks as one of the most difficult languages to learn, particularly as a Caucasian.

He returned to Fanling in 2018 to play the Hong Kong Open for the second year, and whilst staying at _e Peninsula Hong Kong, he took time out to chat to the Peninsula magazine.
